Product Description

Tropicamide Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%: Rapid-Acting Mydriatic for Diagnostic Exams

Tropicamide Ophthalmic Solution is a topical Anticholinergic medication used in veterinary medicine primarily for its Mydriatic (pupil-dilating) and mild cycloplegic effects. While originally approved for human use, it is the standard agent used by veterinarians on an extra-label basis for dogs, cats, and horses to facilitate thorough eye examinations. Tropicamide works by blocking the sphincter muscle of the iris, causing the pupil to dilate rapidly—usually within 15 to 30 minutes. Its relatively short duration of action makes it ideal for diagnostic purposes compared to longer-acting agents like Atropine.

Key Information

  • Active Ingredient: Tropicamide (0.5%).

  • Approved Species (Original Licensing): Human.

  • Common Veterinary Species: Dog, Cat, and Horse (used extra-label).

  • Uses: Pupil dilation (Mydriatic) for fundic examinations and localized pain relief in some inflammatory eye conditions.

  • Form: Sterile, buffered, isotonic solution (preserved with benzalkonium chloride).

  • Route of Administration: Ophthalmic (Eye Drops).

Prescription Required

Tropicamide Ophthalmic Solution is a prescription-only medication. A valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian is required for purchase. Professional oversight is necessary because, while generally safe, Tropicamide can cause a transient increase in intraocular pressure and is used with caution in patients with glaucoma or those predisposed to it. Similar to other bitter-tasting eye drops, cats may experience significant salivation if the drop drains through the tear ducts into the mouth.
