Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class. While originally approved for human use, it is utilised in veterinary medicine on an extra-label basis for dogs and cats. Unlike many other NSAIDs primarily used for orthopaedic pain, piroxicam is frequently selected by veterinarians for its unique anti-tumour properties. It works by inhibiting the COX enzymes, which reduces inflammation and pain, but also appears to interfere with the blood supply and growth of certain types of cancers.
Active Ingredient: Piroxicam (10 mg).
Approved Species (Original Licensing): Human.
Common Veterinary Species: Dog and Cat (used extra-label).
Uses: Adjunctive treatment for certain cancers (particularly transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and squamous cell carcinoma), and management of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis.
Form: Capsule.
Route of Administration: Oral.
Piroxicam is a prescription-only medication. A valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian is required for purchase. Professional veterinary oversight is essential as piroxicam has a higher potential for gastrointestinal side effects, such as ulcers, compared to some other veterinary-specific NSAIDs. Your veterinarian will monitor your pet's kidney and liver health through regular blood work and may recommend specific gastroprotective measures.
